Journey to Understanding Minorities Program (JUMP)

Program Details

Jointly organized by United College and Technology and Education: Connecting Cultures (TECC), the Journey to Understanding Minorities Program (JUMP) will officially kick off in September.

With our world becoming increasingly globalized, the importance of cultural cohesion and understanding is becoming more prominent. Currently in Hong Kong, South Asian minority children receive little local support. With language and cultural barriers, coupled with the busy schedules and different constraints of their parents, they remain an isolated, vulnerable group in our society. JUMP is a volunteer program designed to let local, mainland and international Students of United College gain a valuable opportunity in not only understanding the South Asian minority community in Hong Kong, but also to contribute to bridging the cultural gap between Hong Kong and South Asian youth.

The volunteer program will recruit 20 local, mainland and international students from UC to conduct three workshops and three outings for South Asian as well as Hong Kong local primary students. The service centre in cooperation would be with Ngau Tau Kok Caritas. The program will run every Saturday morning for 6 weeks from 15/10 to 19/11, with a Christmas party and evaluation session in December.

Volunteers recruited would be given great flexibility in practicing their creativity, and will participate in designing the workshops and outings together. They would also be assigned specific children mentees. Apart from being able to develop long lasting friendships with our children, volunteers would also be able to bond and learn from other UC volunteers from different cultural backgrounds.
